On July 25th, Chef Juan, Executive Chef of La Concha Key West, hosted an engaging teen cooking class at the SOS Callahan Community Kitchen, aimed at teaching young adults essential culinary skills for future independence. As many of us know, when life gets busy and hectic, nutritious options are needed to keep us properly fueled. Therefore, the goal was to empower teens to prepare healthy breakfast and lunch meals on their own.
Chef Juan kicked off the session with hands-on instruction of how to make a delicious and nutritious omelet, packed with healthy and tasty ingredients like spinach, onion, tomato, and cheese. He then transformed the leftover ingredients into a flavorful Greek chicken salad, adding Greek yogurt for an extra touch of creaminess. To finish off, Chef Juan prepared a simple yet tasty snack parfait with granola, strawberries, and blueberries.
The 10 attendees had a blast mastering these recipes, their faces lit up with smiles throughout the class. Not only was the class fun and exciting, but it also provided valuable education on nutritious eating and how healthy meals can be both delicious and easy to prepare. Chef Juan emphasized the importance of buying ingredients in bulk and using them across multiple recipes to minimize waste and stay within budget, as he did with the yogurt, vegetables, and cheese.
For many of the teens present, this class was their first experience in a cooking environment, offering practical skills for when they transition from home to living independently. Chef Juan's teachings highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency in the kitchen and helping students understand the significance of cooking and preparing healthy meals for themselves. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to learn essential cooking skills while having a great time! It’s always a pleasure getting to work with Chef Juan, who has been a valuable volunteer with SOS since 2022! SOS is looking forward to working with this formative audience again in the future.
