Nutritious Food Access

Nutrition is important for people of all ages. Nutritious food supports their physical development, mental health and ability to focus in school. A healthy diet also supports life-long physical health and can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Ocean Reef shares this priority and supports occasional food purchasing to ensure our clients have access to healthy foods.

Financial Relief

By receiving supplemental food assistance, SOS's clients are able to put the money saved on their grocery bill towards other costs of living, such as rent, utilities, childcare, healthcare, transportation, and more.

SOS's clients qualify as Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed (ALICE), meaning they struggle to make ends meet between paychecks. 44% of Upper Keys residents are ALICE or living below the poverty line (United Way).

Liveability

Monroe County claims the highest cost of living and the highest average meal cost in the entire state of Florida. Furthermore, the majority of working residents are employed in the tourism industry, which offers low wages. Our pantry, and the donors like Ocean Reef who support it, ensure local residents can afford to live in the Upper Keys with a better quality of life.
