MLK Day Fueled by Community, Service, and Breakfast

Every year, our MLK Day of Service is a reminder of why we do this work, and this year felt especially meaningful.

When we started planning our annual MLK Day project, we knew we wanted to do something both practical and intentional. We chose to serve a hot breakfast at KOTS, a place where guests don’t often get the chance to sit down to a warm morning meal. Breakfast is simple, but it’s powerful. It’s comfort, routine, and care. It’s a way to start the day feeling seen.

What happened next was something truly special.

Through social media outreach and two in-person donation collections at Fausto’s, our community showed up in a big way. The generosity we received, whether through donations, gift cards, or words of encouragement, reminded us just how deeply people care about their neighbors. Because of that support, we were able to not only meet our goals, but exceed them, ensuring a hearty and thoughtful meal for everyone we served.

On the morning of MLK Day, 13 volunteers came together to make it all happen. Our group reflected exactly what our community looks like: high school students choosing to spend their day off giving back, our regular kitchen volunteers who are always there when we need them, and individuals who had been looking for a way to help and finally had the opportunity. Every single person played a role, and our team truly was amazing.

Together, we served about 75 KOTS guests that morning, plates filled with hot breakfast and genuine care. Thanks to the abundance of food and thoughtful planning, guests were also able to enjoy leftovers throughout the day, extending the impact beyond just the morning hours.

MLK Day is about more than service, it’s about living out Dr. King’s call to support one another and strengthen our communities through action. This day reminded us that when people come together with a shared purpose, real impact happens.

We are so thankful to everyone who donated, volunteered, shared our posts, stopped by Fausto’s to give, or simply cheered us on. Our annual MLK Day of Service wouldn’t be possible without you, and we are incredibly grateful to be part of a community that continues to step up, year after year.

Thank you for helping us turn a day of service into a day of connection, dignity, and warmth, starting with breakfast.
