SOS Foundation and AH Monroe Empower Clients Through “Shop Smart, Save Big” Nutrition Education Series

The Star of the Sea (SOS) Foundation recently concluded a successful seven-week nutrition and grocery shopping education series, Shop Smart, Save Big, hosted in partnership with AH Monroe. The program, held every Wednesday from September 17 to October 29, 2025, equipped participants with practical tools to make healthier, more budget-conscious food choices.

The series combined traditional classroom style learning, cooking demonstrations, and real-world shopping experiences to help clients build lasting confidence in nutrition, meal planning, and smart shopping. At the conclusion of the series, participants received certificates of completion and, thanks to the generous support of the Metropolitan Community Church of Key West, a Winn Dixie gift card to help reinforce the lessons learned and apply new skills in their everyday shopping.

Each week focused on a new theme—from understanding balanced meals and reading nutrition labels to cross-utilizing ingredients and making the most of staples commonly found in food pantries. Participants engaged in hands-on cooking classes and field trips, including visits to the SOS Stock Island Food Pantry and a guided shopping trip at Winn Dixie.

“This program is about empowering individuals to make the most of their resources while nourishing themselves and their families,” said Rebekah MacArthur, Nutrition Programs Director at SOS Foundation.

“By blending education, hands-on experience, and community support, we hope to make healthy eating more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.”

AH Monroe clients who took part in Shop Smart, Save Big praised the series for its approachable and practical approach to nutrition. Many noted that they felt more confident navigating grocery stores, comparing prices, and preparing balanced meals at home.

The SOS Foundation continues to expand its nutrition education programming throughout Monroe County, helping residents build healthier habits and stronger connections to their local food system.
